Drip, Drip, Drip

The thing about even ‘luxury’ hotels in Asian countries is that sods law applies where utilities are concerned, whereby some gadget is likely to break down at some point. Especially in The Wet Season. It could be the “luxury” taxi you’re travelling in, or the much bragged about hot water available proving to be stony cold. Here, in the space of 3 days: the air-conditioning unit has flooded the foyer overnight, making exiting the room and access to the bathroom over marbled floors, somewhat dangerous; the loo overflowed today; the power outlet most suitable for boiling the small kettle provided for tea and coffee-making went kaputsky on me. Yep, daily powers surges are to be expected. Ditto droughts and flooding rains, when it comes to water works.

Indeed, as I have been typing this, there have been no fewer than a dozen power surges, where the quaint pseudo-antique wall lamps illuminating the desk at which I sit flicker out momentarily and then come on again just as suddenly. None of which bothers me. All the rest is too damn good to let a few inescapable third world monsoonal leakages put a dampener on things, if you’ll excuse the pun.
